About Dyeing

What's the best Dye colours for Beginner Dyers?
For first time dyers and younger children we recommend the 3 dye colour kits.

The dyes you receive are

  • Yellow
  • Magenta
  • Turquoise

As the dyes act like watercolour you'll be able to blend the dyes to create orange, purple and green.

With fewer dye colours the instance of creating urky murky colours is almost eliminated, your children will be able create a beautiful bright Tie Dye.

All our workshop kits come with detailed instructions so you'll know exactly what to do every step of the way.

What's the best Dye colours for Experienced Dyers?

For experience dyers and older participants we recommend the 6 colour kit . The dyes you receive are

  • Yellow
  • Golden
  • Orange
  • Magenta
  • Turquoise
  • Deep Blue

As the dyes act like watercolour you'll be able to blend the dyes to create red, deep purple, violet and green.

There is a chance of creating urky murky colours eg if you mix Orange with Turquoise, but if you know your colours and place your dyes carefully on your fabric you'll create amazing Tie Dyes.

All our workshop kits come with detailed instructions so you'll know exactly what to do every step of the way.

We want to Tie Dye in Koori colours do you have them?
Yes we do, our Koori colours were chosen in consultation with the Red Belly Black Aboriginal craft group at Beresfield NSW
  • Yellow
  • Red
  • Black
HOW LONG DOES A WORKSHOP TAKE?
Depending on the ages of the children and the item they have chosen to dye we estimate the activity will take approximately 2 hours for tying and dyeing (plus preparation).
Tie dyeing can be done inside or outside. The children will take their tie dyed item home in the take home bags provided to be washed out 24 hrs after dyeing them.
DO WE HAVE TO PREWASH THE THINGS WE WILL DYE?
YES. It's always best to pre-wash any fabric before wearing it or using it for craft. Most fabric and clothing is imported from overseas and is treated with a finishing chemical eg formaldehyde to stop it being eaten by bugs or mould during time in a shipping container. Some manufactures use substances to make the fabric seem thicker. All these chemicals can interfere with the dyeing process. Pre-washing all new clothing or fabric is a good habit to get into and helps ensure the dye bonds with your fabric.

I co-ordinate multiple centres what do I order?
It is important that each group has the right amount of dye and soda ash, to ensure they get what they need. To save you the time and stress of working it all out just let us know the size of each of your centres and we can pack the right size kit for each group (this is a free service).
WHAT IF I'M NOT SURE OF NUMBERS?
Tie dyeing is a very popular activity with many centres are telling us that it was their most popular activity for their holiday program. We suggest you order for you full capacity as the dyes will keep for using later if you don't add the soda ash solution to them.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO GET OUR TIE DYE KIT?
Once your payment has been received we allow 7 working days to pack and send your order. Depending on your location the couriers may take around a week for delivery.
DO YOU HAVE A CUT OFF DATE?
For you peace of mind we ask that you place your order as soon as possible. Although we can pack workshop kits quickly if needed urgently, we do get very busy in the weeks leading up to the school holidays.  From our experience it is best to give couriers a week to deliver your kit (longer for WA), as sometimes unforseen events happen.  If you allow 2 weeks from placing your order to receiving your workshop kit you'll be assured you kit will reach you ahead of time.
HOW DO I ORDER & PAY?
As each centre has unique requirement please place your order by phoning Kimberlie on 0400 747 618 or email us your enquiry.

We accept payment via direct deposit, cheques and Credit cards.
